Composite Teaching Modules
- 01 - Introduction/Background Module
- This is the first of our Composite teaching Modules and is organized by episodes that constitute an introduction to the current state of affairs and the ongoing Genocide.
- 02 - Weaponizing Anti-Semitism Module
- `In this composite teaching module, we have curated segments of teach-ins around the theme of Media Discourses. One of the most visible fronts of the struggle against Zionism has been discourses and debates in every form of media from social media to mainstream cable news outlets. Within these forums we see the fight for discursive power manifesting through competing narratives. In contemporary media narratives October 7th has become a new a milestone event and its own discourse that proponents of Zionism have utilized to justify Israel’s genocide in Gaza. In these segments, our experts explain Zionist narratives dominate media discourses around Palestine and obfuscate Israel's crimes and Palestinian suffering. This composite teaching module will offer students the discursive resources and knowledge to push back against dominant and hegemonic narratives that justify the ongoing occupation and genocide of the Palestinian people.
- 03 - International Law Module
- In this composite teaching module, we have curated segments of teach-ins around the theme of International Law. Our experts and speakers outline how international humanitarian and human rights law is relevant to the current situation in Palestine broadly and Gaza specifically. Speakers explore how international law in theory could be used to help Palestinians achieve their rights and freedom, and how it has failed in practice. They also address what international law says about Israeli occupation, apartheid, and genocide in Palestine. In what ways is Israel violating international law? How is international law being hampered in addressing the violations of it by Israel? What can international law do for Palestinians?
- 04 - The Nakba Module
- In this composite teaching module, we have curated segments of teach-ins around the topic of the Nakba. The Nakba, an Arabic term which literally translates to the 'catastrophe' in English, was arguably the most defining moment of Palestinian history as it set the trajectory for decades of further colonialism, displacement, occupation, and now genocide. The Nakba occurred in 1948 and constituted the violent and systematic displacement, ethnic cleansing, and dispossession of approximately 750,000 Palestinians by Zionist paramilitaries. During the Nakba, Zionist paramilitaries such as the Hagana and Irgun committed dozens of massacres against Palestinians and destroyed approximately 500 Palestinian villages. Much of Palestinian society was destroyed and fractured, and one of the largest refugee populations in history was created. Our speakers explain the roots, process, and consequences of the Nakba and how this tragedy has shaped Palestinian history since.
- 05 - Zionism Module
- In this composite teaching module, we have curated segments of teach-ins around the topic of Zionism. Zionism is the political and secular ideology which emerged in the late 19th century among a small number of European Jews in response to centuries of anti-Semitism in Europe. Theodore Herzl was the first to articulate the idea of Zionism in its modern political and settler-colonial form. Emerging at the height of European colonization of the world, Zionism itself was an explicitly settler-colonial ideology according to its own founders. While Zionism began as a minority position among European Jews it began to grow as an ideology as anti-Semitism intensified in places like Germany and Eastern Europe. The idea was to create a national homeland for Jews in which they could be safe from anti-Semitism. As Zionist thinkers and leaders began to focus on Palestine as the location for a Jewish homeland, they also debated how to deal with the native Palestinian-Arab population. Ultimately Zionists settled on expulsion as the necessary strategy for establishing a Jewish homeland. Learning about Zionism as an ideology and its history is critical to understanding the current situation in Palestine.
